Calling all Volunteers in Horfield and Lockleaze

Back in June for Volunteers Week we carried a piece listing all the local volunteering roles that were available. As the piece proved to be very successful we are repeating the exercise this month with an up to date listing. If you’ve got some spare time and a desire to give to your community please have a look. You do get a really good “feel good” factor and it is a great way of meeting people. If you or your organisation are not included please get in touch and we will make sure you are included next time.

Filton Avenue Junior School

We are always in need of more people to spend time reading with our children. We have positions at our Lockleaze Road site and Orchard campus for reading buddies to support children aged 5-11.

This is what one of our volunteers says, “I chose to volunteer as a Reading Buddy as I would like all children, if possible, to be given a love of learning that will remain with them lifelong.  I do not like the thought of some pupils sitting their GCSEs and not being able to read, or understand, the questions, or not applying for jobs, or courses, because they cannot read.  The children I read with are not at this stage yet but if my giving of an hour a week enables children of eight years old to enjoy language, want to engage with books and acquire knowledge, then I hope this stands them in good stead throughout the rest of their school days.

“The school I go to is Filton Avenue Primary, where I read with four children a week.  I am always impressed with the friendly welcome I am given by the staff and the professionalism of the teachers.  The atmosphere in the school is one of caring and valuing each child, so that they are able to fulfill their potential.  As a Reading Buddy, I have been appreciated by the school, so I feel this volunteering is worthwhile.  It may only be a small difference that I can make (and it really is a shared celebration when a child moves up to the next reading level!) but helping a child towards a future where they have a fairer chance in life is the biggest reward of this voluntary work”.

The School can be contacted on 0117 9030302 or see www.filtonavenue.com.

The Hub/ Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust

Current opportunities include:

Activities and Events helper – to help at monthly ‘Tea and Talk’ sessions for older people living in the local area. The sessions generally last 2 hours and your help would include welcoming people, serving teas and coffees, and supporting people to take part in the session activity.

There is also the opportunity to help out with monthly minibus day trips.

Driver – to use own transport to pick up older people from their homes and bring to and return from our monthly ‘Tea and Talk’ sessions. The Old Library

The Old Library is a self-sufficient 100% volunteer & resident run community space in the South Lockleaze, Purdown and Eastville neighbourhood on Muller Road. This resident-led project has been built from the ground up by dedicated and passionate local people, designed for everyone and anyone to get involved, share skills, create, learn and inspire others to do the same, whilst providing a relaxing and fun atmosphere for people of all ages and backgrounds to use.

One year on after getting the keys to the former Eastville Library, The Old Library continues to rely 100% on the fantastic community spirit that has shone through in the past 12 months, and the wonderful hardworking volunteers that open the doors, keep the café running, run events and fundraising activities, carry out gardening and maintenance, manage finances & admin tasks, and help create a space that everyone can be proud to be a part of. . No single person gets any wage from the project, and though different people are involved for different reasons – whether for want to improve access to groups for their children, meet new friends or for the enjoyment of being involved in a grassroots project – the goal is the same for everyone; coming together as a community, and wanting to make a positive change.

There are some key roles we are looking to fill this Autumn – can you offer a few hours a week to help with this amazing project?

Bookings Support – Can you support our hire coordinator with in-coming bookings via email? The role doesn’t have set hours and any support you can offer on this would be fantastic! This would involve emailing & liaising with hirers, updating the online calendar and liaising with our treasurer to check payments have been made.

Be part of an Events & fundraising team – The Old Library would love to run more community events, music nights, family fun days and more, but need both those who would like to help on the days, but also passionate people with good ideas who can help lead the way and organise events! We have the Old Library Christmas party to organise on the 9th December – can you get involved with us?

Weekend Café team – We would like 2 people to help run the café on the 1st Saturday of the month, so that many more people can come and use the space, enjoy the garden, read books & socialize with their neighbours. Hygiene & café training all provided, and scope to make it yours!

If you have ideas of ways you’d like to be involved, or have an interest in any of the areas above, the Old Library would love to hear from you. Get in touch with us at southlockleaze@gmail.com
