A community consultation event was held at the Old Library to discuss Aura Power’s plans to develop a battery-based energy storage system in the Lockleaze area.

This project will support renewable energy generation and provide critical services to National Grid. Excess electricity will be stored when demand is low and exported back to the grid when demand is high. There’s no onsite generation, which means no burning of fossil fuels, no fumes and no pollution.

The proposed development site is behind Kellaway Builders’ Merchants off Romney Avenue and The Horfield and Lockleaze Voice understand that that the storage system will be constructed in sixteen weeks.

Simon Coulson, director of Aura Power says, “Successful development of this project will make it much harder for polluting energy projects (e.g. diesel peaking plants) to use the local grid infrastructure in the future. Aura Power is a Bristol-based company and we want to ensure that we work closely with the local community to make use of the locally available electricity infrastructure in an environmentally clean and sensitive way. Please feel free to email you questions or comments to info@aurapower.co.uk and we will respond to you as soon as we can”.

Bruce Yates of RADE (Residents against Dirty Energy) adds, “This is an important milestone for Bristol. As of January 2017 Western Power Distribution have allowed the use of battery storage on its system, Lockleaze has been identified as a suitable site for this new technology. We now have a clean and ethical option, we can be one of the first sites in the South-West to take advantage of new battery storage technology with the added bonus of it being provided by a Bristol based company”.

Local resident Karen Bristoll who was instrumental in the fight against the diesel generators commented, “Bristol and the rest of the UK should be embracing these green energies. Looks like a brighter and clean future ahead”.
